The mission of the Stagville Memorial Project is to establish a memorial in downtown Durham in honor of those enslaved at Stagville Plantation. In so doing, we hope to bring more awareness about the Stagville Historic Site and help the Durham community keep the history of Stagville in mind when engaging in conversations around racial disparities in our city. Many of the people enslaved at Stagville went on to found historically black neighborhoods like Braggtown and Hayti. Please join us in our effort to bring to life a memorial that serves as both a symbolic honoring of those enslaved and also attempts to tell a fuller history of Durham in our public spaces.
